What moves the price
Size and floors
More bathrooms and more floors mean more branch lines and more openings. A bungalow with an open basement ceiling is the easiest case.
Wall openings
Access is the hidden cost: how many openings the plumber needs and who closes them decides whether two quotes are really comparable.
No rule forces it
Poly-B is not illegal and no rule requires replacement; codes are not retroactive. Most Alberta installations used copper or brass insert fittings.

Permits for this job
A repipe needs a plumbing permit from the City of Calgary. When you hire a plumber, the plumber takes it out; a homeowner who owns and lives in the house can take out a homeowner permit only for work they do themselves.
Plumber and Gasfitter are compulsory certification trades in Alberta: paid work is done by a certified journeyperson or a registered apprentice working under one. Ask to see the certificate.
Red flags on a quote
- 'Drywall repair by others' with no mention of who that is
- A price with no pipe material named
- Pressure to replace Poly-B because it is 'illegal' (it is not)
Before you pay any deposit: an Alberta prepaid contracting licence (required when a business takes money before the work is finished), a WCB-Alberta clearance letter, and a written contract.
Do I have to replace Poly-B?
No. Poly-B is no longer in the current plumbing codes, but codes are not retroactive, so existing Poly-B is not illegal. Some insurers ask about it, so check with yours.
