Hourly or fixed
A well-defined job can be quoted as a fixed price after the plumber sees it. An open hourly estimate puts the risk of a long job on you.
What turns up
A part that is not on the truck, a pipe behind finished drywall or a problem bigger than the first description all add hours.
Permits for this job
A repair that does not change the piping is generally not permit work under Alberta's Permit Regulation. Altering or adding to the piping needs a plumbing permit, which the City of Calgary issues; starting before the permit is issued doubles the permit fee.
Plumber and Gasfitter are compulsory certification trades in Alberta: paid work is done by a certified journeyperson or a registered apprentice working under one. Ask to see the certificate.
